FAQ On 3D Scanning:

What can’t I scan?

While 3D scanning is a versatile technology, certain objects pose challenges and may not yield optimal results. Transparent or highly reflective surfaces, such as glass or mirrors, can interfere with accurate laser or structured light scanning, causing distortions and incomplete data capture. Similarly, objects with intricate, shiny, or transparent textures, like polished metals or transparent plastics, may create difficulties in achieving precise scans.

I want to scan something smooth, can I?

Objects that lack distinct features or have a uniform surface can also be challenging for 3D scanning. Smooth and featureless surfaces may result in a lack of reference points, leading to difficulties in tracking and rendering accurate 3D models. Our scanner is very accurate, but we may need to spray your model with 3D scanning spray to make it less reflective. This spray cleans off easily and will not permanently alter your model.

How small/big can we go?

Extremely small (less than 2 inches) or large objects (like a car) may pose challenges due to the limitations of the scanning equipment. Very small objects may not have enough surface area for scanners to capture, while overly large objects may require specialized equipment for comprehensive scanning. We do have a portable scanner, however results can at times be mixed for on-site scanning depending on lighting conditions. Objects in environments with insufficient lighting or excessive ambient noise can affect the accuracy of 3D scans. Adequate preparation, choosing the right scanning technology, and considering the properties of the objects in question are crucial for successful 3D scanning outcomes.

Can you scan my face and put it onto a statue for my desk?

Yes.

What won’t you scan?

Weapons or illegal objects will not be scanned. We will also not scan anything that is the intellectual property of another entity for the purposes of reverse engineering.

How much does 3D scanning cost?

We capture 3D scans using several methods, and can combine multiple scans to create a full model. Your price will be based on the complexity of your scanning project. Generally, most 3D scanning projects fall in the $20-$100 range depending on the nature of the project and the accuracy needed to perform a scan. Some scans take minutes, some take multiple scans over several hours. We will be happy to provide a quote before starting your scan.

Can you scan my thing and make me copies of it?

Absolutely, as long as it is not a copyrighted item. We won’t copy other companies’ creations and sell them as our own.

Is there a return policy on scans?

You are welcome to preview the model on site before purchasing, and make suggestions on improving it. Once we send you your file, there are no refunds. We will offer to re-scan your object to attempt a better scan if you are not satisfied with the result. If your model does not scan properly after many attempts, we will not charge you or send you a file.
